Plant Dye Workshop with chelsea
Learn how to make botanical art with plants like Marigold, Indigo (Persicaria tinctoria), Cosmos and others sourced from nature. Take home a piece of textile art and your own open-pollinated, organically-cultivated, climate-adapted seeds to grow yourself.
In this 6 hour private lesson over 2 days, we will cover the basics of natural dyeing:
scouring,
mordanting,
and dyeing fibres using a range of techniques.
Experiment with dye methods such as
hammer printing,
bundle dyeing,
and dip dyeing with a resist
Bring your own light-coloured 100% cotton, wool or silk fabric or use the materials supplied.
Workshop is limited to 3 people at my home studio. For me to come to your site, an additional fee of $50 will apply.
Supplies included:
Soda Ash,
Synthropol,
Binder of Soy Milk, and metal mordants Alum, Iron (ferrous sulphate), and Copper,
Oak Gall Tannin and other colour shifters,
Botanicals such as indigo, marigold, oak leaves, etc.,
Aluminum or Steel Pots and burners,
wooden spoon,
colander or strainer in non-reactive material,
unbleached cotton, silk, wool, linen, or hemp fabric. Feel free to bring your own pieces of undyed fabric to test .
